Democrats call for probe of businessman’s contract

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

A Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette article by Niki Kelly, reports that the Daniels administration entered into a contract with Ft. Wayne businessman Richard E. Rhoad to privately operate some activities of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. The article reports that Rhoad had been doing the same duties as a state employee for $100,000 per year; under the contract he would have the same responsibilities but would be paid $180,000 per year. The article also reports that the Indiana Democratic Party requested Inspector General David Thomas to investigate the contract.

HOUSTON FOR AUDITOR

Monday, April 24th, 2006

I, Michaelene J. Houston, am a lifelong resident of Starke County. I started in the Auditor’s office in November of 1984. In 1990 I signed up as a candidate for the office of Starke County Auditor. I took office on January 1, 1991, and served 2 terms as Auditor. I could not hold 3 consecutive terms and ran for Starke County Commissioner district 2 and took that office on January 1, 1999. At the end of that term I ran for Auditor again and took office for my third term as Auditor on January 1, 2003. With almost 22 years in County Government—18 of which were in the Auditor’s office—I feel I would be the most qualified for the position to continue as your County Auditor.

I am a graduate of Knox High School and graduated from Michiana College of Commerce with an Associates Degree.

I have been married for 35 years to Jeffery J. Houston. We have three children–Michelle Snowdon, Melissa Fairchild and Melinda McCarty. We have 9 grandchildren—Kayla, Byron, Halle, Robby, Brian, Brady, Joey, Miranda and Ellah.

I am the daughter of Michael D. Zingarelli and Billie J. Zingarelli and the granddaughter of Joyce Halcomb and the late Basel Halcomb.

I would appreciate your support on May 2, 2006, and November 7, 2006.

Thank you for voting for your Starke County Democrat Team!!

Michaelene J. Houston, Starke County Auditor

Democrats ask Governor to publicly correct jobs record

Friday, April 14th, 2006

Department of Workforce Development misreported numbers

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Democrats today called on Gov. Mitch Daniels to publicly correct a reporting error by the Department of Workforce Development that led to the repeated dissemination of inaccurate jobs numbers by the administration.

On March 17, DWD Commissioner Ron Stiver claimed in a news release that Indiana added 19,500 jobs between February 2005 and February 2006. However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which recently revised Indiana’s data, DWD officials originally misreported and later corrected the state’s estimate. Indiana actually added almost 7,000 fewer jobs over the past year than it originally had reported.

An April 7 e-mail from a BLS economist to the Indiana Democratic Party explains that “Indiana changed their estimate because they discovered a reporting error.”

Indiana Democratic Party Chair Dan Parker pointed out that the Daniels administration claims economic development and job creation are among its top priorities.

“There’s no shame in admitting you made a mistake and apologizing to the public for it,” Parker said. “But this is the most important issue on most Hoosiers’ minds, and they deserve to know the true facts about job growth in Indiana.”

Parker noted that between February 2004 and February 2005, Indiana led the Midwest in job growth, adding 44,000 jobs. Now, he said, the state is languishing near the bottom of the rankings – 45th in the nation for job gain, according to BLS statistics.

“There’s no way you can twist these numbers,” Parker said. “While the national economy is recovering, Indiana is dragging its heels, and hard-working Hoosiers are suffering. Meanwhile, Mitch Daniels is shipping millions of taxpayer dollars out of Indiana.”

In his 16 months as Governor, Daniels has sent almost $1 billion taxpayer dollars to out-of-state companies, and his administration has said that a $1 billion social services contract will soon be awarded to a non-Indiana vendor. When he took office, Daniels changed the definition of an Indiana company to make his outsourcing efforts look more inclusive.

VOTE NANCY DEMBOWSKI –
DISTRICT 17 REPRESENTATIVE

Friday, April 7th, 2006

IT’S “TIME” TO ELECT DEMBOWSKI

Nancy DembowskiNancy Dembowski has deep roots in Indiana’s 17th House District. Her parents lived in Knox their entire lives and her grandfather was a County Assessor and the longest-serving Fire Chief in Knox history.

Nancy was born and raised in Knox and has lived her entire life there. She graduated from Knox Community High School and married her husband Ed and they made the decision to stay in Knox and raise their family there. They have three children who live in Knox and eight grandchildren. Ed passed away in 1995. They have been married for 43 years.

While Ed worked as a union steelworker for 34 years, Nancy worked at W.K.V.I. Radio in Knox for 25 years. In 1984, Nancy was elected to the Starke County Council and received the highest number of votes among all county candidates. She was re-elected to serve on the County Council in 1988, again leading the county ticket. The County had a balanced budget all seven years Nancy served on the County Council. In 1990, Nancy received the Starke County Citizen of the Year Award. She served on the Council until 1991 when Nancy was elected Mayor of Knox. Nancy was re-elected to two additional terms and served a total of eleven years in the Office of Mayor. She is one of the longest serving mayors in Knox history. As Mayor, Nancy led the effort to build the Knox Community Center and led the renovation of the Historic Gateway Depot. In addition, during her service as Mayor, the City of Knox received two prestigious Achievement Awards from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. Only four Indiana Cities receive these awards each year.

Nancy was elected to the Indiana Senate in December of 2002 by Democratic precinct committee people to fill the unexpired term of former Senator Bill Alexa. Nancy Dembowski is a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Knox.
